About the Event
🏜️ 2026 Official Red Dirt Backyard Ultra
Presented by Pilbara Trailblazers
The Red Dirt Backyard Ultra is back — bigger, bolder, and now officially part of the Backyard Ultra World Series!
Set on a 6.71 km loop (or “yard,” as it’s known in the Backyard Ultra world), participants run one loop every hour, on the hour, until there’s only one runner left standing — the Last One Standing (LOS). Everyone else is marked a DNF (Did Not Finish).
🌅 The Course
Starting and finishing at the Bayview Road Caravan Park in Nickol, the loop takes runners through a true Pilbara landscape — gravel, hard sand, and iconic red dirt. While the course is flat, the mixed terrain and uneven surfaces become their own challenge as the hours (and loops) tick by.
🏃♀️ The Format
For 2026, the Red Dirt Backyard Ultra will run as long as two runners remain in the race — no teams this time, just pure endurance and mental grit.
Come and test yourself — see how many yards you can conquer!
🌏 The Backyard Ultra Concept
The Backyard Ultra format was created by Lazarus Lake (Laz) of Big Dog’s Backyard Ultra in the USA. Laz designed it as an approachable way to explore human limits — one yard at a time. Western Australia is proud home to some of the biggest Backyard Ultras in the world, including:
Herdy’s Frontyard Ultra, hosted by Ultra Series WA at Herdsman Lake in Perth
Birdy’s Backyard Ultra at Lake Towerinning in the South West
📜 Red Dirt Backyard Ultra History
2022 – Our inaugural year saw 39 solo runners take on the challenge. Levi Winman claimed victory, with Ben Lyon as his assist, after an incredible 12 hours / 80 km.
2023 – We introduced a 24-hour format and team entries. Ethan Stirrat (24 loops) took the solo win, with Jamie Oborne (16 loops) as assist. Team Primal MMA ran all 24 hours, covering 161.04 km.
2024 – Our first official Backyard Ultra, with Phil Gore taking the Last One Standing title (33 loops), and Jamie Oborne once again the assist (32 loops).
2025 - Chris Lewinski taking the Last One Standing title (26 loops), and Jacs Homann once again the assist (25 loops).
🔥 2026 – What Will You Bring to the Yard?
There’s no set finish line. No medals for distance. Just you, the loop, and the clock. How many yards can you last?
